Some emerging technologies to watch in 2022
Flying electric taxis
Long seen as something of a fantasy, flying taxis are getting serious. Several firms around the world will step up test flights in 2022 with the aim of getting their aircraft certified for commercial use in the following year or two. Joby Aviation, based in California, plans to build more than a dozen of its five-seat vehicles, which have a 150-mile range. Volocopter of Germany aims to provide an air-taxi service at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Other competitors include eHang, Lilium and Vertie Aerospace.
Delivery drones (无人机)
Wing, a sister company of Google, has been doing test deliveries in America, Australia and Finland and will expand its mall-to-home delivery service, launched in late 2021.Dronamics Bulgarian startup, will start using winged drones to shuttle cargo between 39 European airports. The question is: will the pace of drone deliveries go up or drop off? Personalized nutrition
Diets don't work. Evidence is growing that each person's metabolism (新陈代谢) is unique, and food choices should be, too. Enter personalized nutrition: apps that tell you what to eat and when, using machine-learning algorithms, tests of your blood and gut microbiome (菌群), data on lifestyle factors such as exercise, and real-time tracking of blood-sugar levels using coin-sized devices attached to the skin. After successful launches in America, personalized nutrition firms are eyeing other markets in 2022. Some will also seek approval as treatments for conditions such as diabetes and migraine.

B.To get approved for commercial use.
C.To provide an air-taxi service in 2024.
D.To get more serious about their business.
2.What may be people's concern about delivery drones?
A.The capacity of the drones.
B.The speed of their service.
C.The range of their delivery.
D.The reliability of their technology.
3.Which information is NOT included in the personalized nutrition apps?
A.Data on exercise.

From her lifeguard station at the end of the pool, Jessica noticed clouds forming, the windpicking up and the sky darkening. The pool manager announced over the loudspeaker that the pool is closing immediately, asking everyone to head to the safety of home before the storm hit.
All the swimmers had left by 3 :30 except Jessica's neighbor, eight-year-old Zack. Zack's mother had planned to pick him up after work, but the storm was coming fast. Jessica decided to drop Zack off on her way home, She taped a note for Ms Hill on the door of the pool office and headed out.
The minute Jessica and Zack left the parking lot, it was clear that this was no ordinary storm. Jessica said, “Zack, I'm going to take you to my house. We need to get inside right away, and your house is farther away than mine." She pressed the garage-door opener, but nothing happened. The electricity was out. The front door was only a few feet away, but the wind was so strong that Jessica and Zack had to fight their way into the house. Jessica held Zack's hand firmly. The door was heavy with the pressure of the wind. Finally, it opened, but it was blown out of Jessica's hand and hit the side of the house. The window broke into pieces. Jessica picked up Zack and threw the two of them inside; her only thought was to get to a safe place.
Remembering everything she could from her emergency training, Jessica took Zack to the completely dark basement. Jessica held Zack's trembling hand tightly. Feeling their way with great caution, they sat down in a corner finally. Outside, the lightning flashed, the thunder roared, and the furious wind howled, which threatened to put the world to an end. Feeling overwhelmingly scared, little Zack burst into tears, saying, “I miss my mom." Jessica held him in her arms, saying, “Honey, don't be afraid! Everything will be all right.”
After a final crash, the sound of the storm grew distant. Jessica sighing with relief, the pair hugged each other and shed tears of excitement.

What do ten dollars, a garden, and Elon-Musk’s brother have in common? They’re used to fight against food insecurity and build the world’s only biggest gardener community. Launched on the autumn equinox(秋分), the Million Gardens Movement (MGM)is a charitable and educational plan that hopes to put a garden in every family
Kimbal Musk, Elon Musk’s brother and the Executive Director of the non-profit Big Green, hoped that the MGM puts Little Green Garden units in homes and classrooms for just $10. He explains that each garden has its special growing plan and online lessons and activities to support the growth of culture-related vegetable gardens at home.
The MGM platform is simple as a whole. If you’re a gardener, sign up to join the community. Donate$10 to a family that can’t afford a garden, or that lives in a food desert, read and contribute to the blog and then tell other gardeners about it.
“Ten years ago, I co-founded Big Green focusing on under-resourced communities to increase access to fresh food,” says Musk. “Today it’s a national non-profit organization working with schools in several major cities with almost 640 outdoor leaning garden classrooms. The Million Gardens Movement is put forward to make it simple for anyone to give a family a garden. Planting a seed is an act of hope for a brighter tomorrow. We hope millions of people will join us to grow their own gardens and give a garden to a family.”
They’ve been able to deliver garden kits to Denver, Detroit, Memphis and Indianapolis so far. “We hope to expand to Canada this year with sights on Vancouver and Toronto,” adds Musk. “We also hope to expand to Mexico and beyond to make this a worldwide movement to encourage millions of people to grow their own food.”

Many of the world’s largest consumer product companies, including Coca-Cola, Unilever and PepsiCo, have set ambitious targets for replacing original plastics with recycled ones-typically 25% of their total packaging by 2025. So far, however, most companies have made modest progress and will need to accelerate their efforts to reach these high goals, according to a new cover story in Chemical& Engineering News, an independent news outlet of the American Chemical Society.
In the U.S., only about 10% of plastics are recycled into new products, compared with nearly33% in Europe, writes senior editor Alex Tullo. Facing increasing consumer pressure, many companies have made big promises to increase the amount of recycled plastics they use in packaging to 25%-50% by 2025 or 2030. However, most currently hover at a recycling rate between 2% and 12%, meaning that they will need to greatly speed up their efforts in order to succeed. Meeting the goals will require new technologies to help make plastics easier to recycle, as well as widespread collaboration and investment among brand owners, consumers, recycling facilities, chemical companies and others.
In traditional mechanical recycling, facilities sort through consumers’ recyclables collected local trash porters, separating plastics from metal, glass and other materials. To ease this dud process, AMP Robotics has developed a machine with learning-based technology that identify different types of plastics and pulls unwanted materials off the line with an inflated(充气的)arm. Next, the separated plastics are cut, washed, melted and reshaped. Then, plastics intended for food packaging undergo additional finishing steps.
Although recycling firms have developed new technologies, such as solvent extraction(溶剂萃取), to recycle different types of plastic more efficiently, consumer product companies must redesign their packaging, for example, by removing various plastics and metalized layers, to make them easier to recycle. Also, experts say that consumers need to do their part by putting more of their used plastics into recycling bins.
【答案】12.D;13.B;14.B;15.D;
12.To achieve the high goals in recycling, what need those companies do?
A.Promise to use more recycled plastics in packaging.
B.Connect new technologies with traditional recycling.
C.Turn to AMP Robotics with learning-based technology.
D.Combine new technologies, cooperation with financial support.
13.Compared with traditional recycling, what is the advantage of AMP Robotics?
A.It can separate plastics from multiple materials.
B.It can identify and pick out the unwanted plastics.
C.It can recycle plastics for food packaging directly.
D.It can use solvent extraction to ease plastics recycling.
14.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Solvent extraction is a traditional recycling method.
B.Consumers are expected to practice garbage classification.
C.Recycling firms should remove plastics layers to ease recycling.
D.Redesigning packaging makes no difference in plastics recycling.
15.What is the text mainly about?
A.Traditional recycling will be replaced.
B.Redesigning the food packaging is very urgent.
C.New technologies are much needed in plastics recycling.
D.There’s a long way to go for plastics recycling.
12.细节理解题。根据第二段的“Meeting the goals will require new technologies to help make plastics easier to recycle, as well as widespread collaboration and investment among brand owners, consumers, recycling facilities, chemical companies and others.(要实现这一目标,需要新技术帮助塑料更容易回收,以及品牌所有者、消费者、回收设施、化工企业和其他方面的广泛合作和投资。)”可知,为了达到回收的高目标,这些公司需要新技术、合作与资金支持。故选D。
13.细节理解题。根据第三段的“AMP Robotics has developed a machine with learning-based technology that identify different types of plastics and pulls unwanted materials off the line with an inflated(充气的)arm.(AMP Robotics公司开发了一种基于学习技术的机器,可以识别不同类型的塑料,并使用充气手臂将不需要的材料从生产线上拉下来。)”可知,与传统回收相比,AMP Robotics的优势是它可以识别和挑选不需要的塑料。故选B。
14.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Also, experts say that consumers need to do their part by putting more of their used plastics into recycling bins.(此外,专家表示,消费者需要尽自己的一份力量,将更多的使用过的塑料放入回收箱。)”可知,我们从最后一段可以推断出希望消费者参与垃圾分类,故选B。
15.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段的“Many of the world’s largest consumer product companies, including Coca-Cola, Unilever and PepsiCo, have set ambitious targets for replacing original plastics with recycled ones-typically 25% of their total packaging by 2025.(包括可口可乐(Coca-Cola)、联合利华(Unilever)和百事可乐(PepsiCo)在内的许多世界上最大的消费品公司都制定了雄心勃勃的目标:到2025年,用可回收塑料取代原有塑料——通常占到其包装总量的25%。)”和“So far, however, most companies have made modest progress and will need to accelerate their efforts to reach these high goals(然而,到目前为止,大多数公司都取得了适度的进展,需要加快努力来实现这些高目标)”可知,全文主要讲述了许多公司制定了宏伟目标,要用可回收的塑料取代原有的塑料,到2025年可回收塑料占到公司包装总量的25%,但取得的进展甚微。
Perhaps all of us want to leave good impressions on others at work. These impressions are like labels pinned on us, but one of the best may be “knowledgeable”. If you sound knowledgeable, you’ll be taken seriously at meetings and elsewhere.____16____ The following ways may be helpful.
____17____
If you want to sound knowledgeable, form a single idea from the material you’ve gathered, and deliver it clearly. No mater how much you know on a topic, the secret to audience engagement is to put it down to a single, convincing idea.
Say, “Here’s what I believe ...” Or “My point is this ...” Be sure to state this idea in one short, sharply focused sentence.____18____
Provide a clear structure.
Once you state your idea, make the depth of your knowledge clear by offering proof points that support your one idea.____19____ They include Reasons, Ways, Steps in a Process, or a Challenge/Response. Give your listeners clear signposts as you proceed through your structure. Use tags like “the first reason,” “the second reason,” or “The challenge we faced ...” and “Our response was ...
Simplify your language.
The simpler your words and sentences, the more profound you’ll sound. Suppose a colleague reporting on a project says: “The satisfaction of all parameters implicates the completion of the project mandate by Q4.” Hearing that, you have every right to be puzzled. A truly knowledgeable colleague would simply say: “We expect to complete this project by year end.”
____20____ Therefore, you’d better choose simple words and short sentences. As Winston Churchill said, “Short words are best, and the old words when short are best of all”.

【答案】A possible version:
No doubt that everyone will be faced with varieties of choices on the way forward. Speaking of that, memories of senior high school crowded in when I made a wise choice to be reconciled with my best friend.
It was one night in Senior 2 when things got a little tough between Emma and me. We had promised to go home together after every evening self-study, but Emma left alone, leaving me waiting like a fool. The following day, Emma ran up to me, trying to apologize, but I turned my head, pretending not to see her. It was my inner pride that drove me to reject her apologies. Having gone through several internal struggles, I couldn’t help passing notes to her to convey feelings of missing and I made up my mind to forgive her eventually.
Due to this experience, I realize more effective communication and mutual understanding will definitely contribute to a strong, close and everlasting friendship.
