It is possible that a highly proficient student is paired with a less proficient one, which could potentially discourage the latter.

One student dominates the conversation while the other remains passive, which may block/hinder the progress of the less talkative student, as they may not get sufficient opportunities to practice and improve their speaking skills.

Students aren't familiar with each other, preventing them from

communicating. /resulting in a less productive practice process.

Grouping students can be based on their language proficiency levels or

  personality.

Were it possible/If possible, could you please give us the freedom to choose our partner?

  Dear Ryan,

I am Lihua, one of your students. To polish up our spoken English, you grouped us students in pairs of two at random. Well intended though it was, I do think there exists some inappropriateness, which I feel obliged to point out.

Your grouping strategy is based on randomness, rather than careful pairing where a weak student is grouped with a stronger one. Addition, the two students might be unfamiliar with each other. This might prevent them from communicating with each other in a deep way, which is necessary for our linguistic improvement.

Thus/Therefore, were it possible, could you please give us the freedom to choose our partner so that we are more likely to single out our ideal mate whether in aspects of personality or language skill.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

  Yours,

  Lihua

  Dear Ryan,

I’m writing to voice/express my concern about the method/way of grouping/pairing two students randomly for our oral/spoken practice practice and share my suggestions/advice with you.

Grouping/Pairing only two students may lead to a highly proficient student dominating the conversation while the other remains passive. Addition, the random grouping/pairing causes a situation where the two students are not familiar with each other, resulting in a less productive discussion.

With these concerns in mind, I would like to suggest an alternative approach—grouping students based on their language proficiency will inspire more valuable ideas about a certain topic. Besides, it can ensure everyone with an equal chance to speak if the turn-taking rule is adopted.

I do hope you can consider my concerns and suggestions. (123w,

  Yours,

  Li Hua

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I won the first place! Half shocked and half disbelieving, I, red-cheeked, was greeted by my teacher and classmates' thunderous applause. I was still in a state of pleasant disbelief when news came that an award presentation was to be held that afternoon. With a less pounding heart, I seated myself among fellow prize winners, my mind travelling back to those days when I applied myself to the creation of Revere's horse, the days of fully immersing myself to the pure joy of writing.

I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. Handing him the certificate and prize, I murmured, "I owed this glory to you." Pushing back my offerings, he replied, "you don't owe me anything. It is just your own dedication, hard work and perseverance that paid off. Addition/Plus, a new world of writing has been opened, isn't it?" Nodding my head firmly, I miraculously found my previous dislike for writing disappeared and a new pathway of being a writer stretched far under my feet, even though it was a pathway full of challenges.
