In 2014, the only example I have seen so far is this, Black Coal, Thin Ice. The reason for its domestic success is presumably because of its awards at the Berlin Film Festival.似乎每隔几年就会出现一两部中国电影，它们虽然节奏缓慢、黑暗且缺少一线明星，却能莫名其妙地吸引一大片国内观众，又不会太过争议妨碍其过审。在2014年，我看到的唯一的例子就是这部《白日焰火》。它在国内获得成功的原因，想必是它在柏林电影节中的获奖。As the story unfolds, despite being based around a series of murders, the film has a pace more similar to an art-house film than a crime- thriller. 　　2、9/10 Black Coal, Thin Ice9星 短评：黑色的煤，薄薄的冰I have seen various Chinese films (specially during the ''90s, the golden age of Hong Kong), but I think Black Coal, Thin Ice is the first (from what I have seen) genuinely Chinese movie, because it embraces the national idiosyncrasy and offers us a revealing look to the culture of that country. Black Coal, Thin Ice is also an excellent thriller on its own right. Its screenplay employs many elements of classic noir: the failed detective, a confusing but vaguely logical mystery and the obligatory femme fatale who might be guilty of the crimes or an innocent victim of circumstances. However, director and screenwriter Yi''nan Diao filters those components through his particular sensibility, and the result is so natural that it borders on the prosaic. For example, near the beginning of the film, there is a very short shootout, shot almost with apathy... the camera is midway and it barely moves; but the impact of the scene is tremendous, manifesting the easiness with which tragedy can come, completely lacking of the artifice and ornaments we see in many Hollywood films. This doesn''t mean that Black Coal, Thin Ice feels flat or superficial. The "anti-style" of the scenes and their minimalistic aesthetic is obviously intentional, highlighting the characters'' opaque lives and the bleak social setting of poverty and corruption, in which dignity and "political correction" are almost inexistent. And all that is frxd by a grey wintry atmosphere, ready to trample human spirit even more. In conclusion, Black Coal, Thin Ice is an innovative and fascinating interpretation of contemporary neo-noir, deceiving us with false clues, obfuscating our perception and saving the revelations for an ending which is as austere and enigmatic as the rest of the film. Faces are shrouded by shadow, characters motives are unclear. We are in very classic noir territory in Black Coal, Thin Ice.大雪覆盖的大街被无休止的黑暗包围着，这让侦探和嫌疑犯变得无法区分，只能依靠霓虹灯柔和的光晕。脸庞被阴影遮盖，人物的动机模糊不明。我们就这样置身于《白日焰火》那非常经典的黑色电影疆界之中。

　　4、8/10 It Gets Icier By The Minute In China''s Siberia8星 短评：在中国的西伯利亚，每分钟都变得更加冰冷This film noir detective story with fantasy elements takes place in China''s northernmost corner, Heilongjiang province, in a nondescxt industrial city where the grip of winter gets colder and colder as the story progresses. You will need to pay attention, as the plot is not explained verbally and you have to notice a lot of visual cues. The characters do not talk much really, and when they do utter a sentence or two, it has nothing to do with the plot. You could almost think that the director would be Jim Jarmusch but he''s not obviously. Diao Yinan has seen an Aki Kaurism?ki film or two, one can tell, and it is no wonder that the film was well received by the Berlin festival crowd. It is not the kind of film Chinese audiences would love, though. This does not make BCTI any worse as a film. It has a dark and twisted, sometimes silly sense of humour. Once you get the hang of it, the plot is easy to follow yet intriguing. Who dun-it - most viewers will not have a clue but neither does the police! The People''s Republic does not send it''s finest this far out in the north. They also have very little to work with to be honest. Detective Zhang who is obsessed with the case has been sacked from the force for very obvious reasons including serious drinking. In addition he can''t skate and he''s in Heilongjiang, which you will notice is not a good thing. The film wrings a lot of atmosphere from the utterly unpleasant surroundings. Excellent actors add to it. If you enjoyed the Coen brothers'' Fargo I can see no reason why you wouldn''t enjoy Black Coal, Thin Ice. It is compelling from beginning to end, enigmatic, tragic and beautiful. It has no heroes. It ends with heartbreak and farce.
