　　这次，小北选择了大家都爱的阿婆（阿加莎·克里斯蒂）的作品——《无人生还》。

　　作者简介

　　阿加莎·克里斯蒂被誉为举世公认的侦探推理小说女王。她的著作英文版销售量逾10亿册，而且还被译成百余种文字，销售量亦逾10亿册。她一生创作了80部侦探小说和短篇故事集，19部剧本，以及6部以玛丽·维斯特麦考特的笔名出版的小说。著作数量之丰仅次于莎士比亚。

　　阿加莎·克里斯蒂的第一部小说《斯泰尔斯庄园奇案》写于第一次世界大战末，战时她担任志愿救护队员。在这部小说中她塑造了一个可爱的小个子比利时侦探赫尔克里·波格，成为继福尔摩斯之后侦探小说中最受读者欢迎的侦探形象。1926年，阿加莎·克里斯蒂写出了自己的成名作《罗杰疑案》（又译作《罗杰·艾克罗伊德谋杀案》）。1952年她最著名的剧本《捕鼠器》被搬上舞台，此后连续上演，时间之长久，创下了世界戏剧史上空前的纪录。

　　1971年，阿加莎·克里斯蒂得英国女王册封的女爵士封号。1975年，英格丽·褒曼凭借根据阿加莎同名小说《东方快车谋杀案》改编的影片获得了第三座奥斯卡奖杯。阿加莎数以亿计的仰慕者中不乏显赫的人物，其中包括女王伊丽莎白二世和法国总统戴高乐。

　　1976年，她以85岁高龄永别了热爱她的人们。

　　沃格雷夫法官先生新近离任退休，现在正在头等车厢的吸烟室里，倚角而坐，一边喷着雪茄烟，一边兴致勃勃地读着《泰晤士报》上的政治新闻。

　　注：这一段里出现的bench这个词不是长椅，而是法官的位子的意思。

　　He laid the paper down and glanced out of the window. They were running now throughSomerset. He glanced at his watch -- another two hours to go.

　　沃格雷夫放下报纸，眺望窗外。列车奔驰在西南沿海的萨默塞特原野上。他看了看表，还有两小时路程。

　　注：萨默塞特是英国英格兰西南部的一个郡，北临布里斯托尔湾。

　　He went over in his mind all that had appeared in the papers about Indian Island. There had been its original purchase by an American millionaire who was crazy aboutyachting-- and anaccountof the luxurious modern house he had built on this little island off the Devon coast. The unfortunate fact that the new third wife of the American millionaire wasa bad sailorhad led to the subsequent putting up of the house and island for sale.

　　他把报纸上讲到的有关印地安岛的种种事情，又在脑子里过了一遍：先是说有一位美国财主，简直对玩游艇着了魔，因此，买下了这个小岛。接着又说这位财主就在这个坐落在德文郡海面的弹丸小岛上盖了一幢豪华绝伦的时髦别墅；可惜的是，他的第三任新夫人最怕水，结果只能连房带岛一起招盘出售。

　　注：account在这里是文章、报道的意思。

　　Bad sailor也表达会晕船的人。

　　Various glowing advertisements of it had appeared in the papers. Then came the first bald statement that it had been bought by a Mr. Owen.

　　关于这，报纸上各式各样的广告越登越多。后来有一条干巴巴的消息说，有位名叫欧文的先生花钱买下了这幢别墅。

　　After that the rumours of the gossip writers had started. Indian Island had really been bought by Miss Gabrielle Turl, the Hollywood film star! She wanted to spend some months there free from all publicity! Busy Bee had hinted delicately that it was to be anabodefor Royalty!

　　打那时起，少不了有烂笔头的文人传开了流言蜚语，说什么印地安岛其实是好莱坞大明星加布里埃尔·特尔为了息影离尘，过上两三个月清静日子买下的啦！而署名为“忙不偷闲”的记者之流又含蓄地暗示说那里将要作为王亲国戚的私邸啦！

　　Mr. Merryweather had had it whispered to him that it had been bought for a honeymoon Young Lord L - had surrendered toCupidat last! Jonas knew for a fact that it had been purchased by theAdmiraltywith a view to carrying out some veryhush hushexperiments! Definitely, Indian Island was news!

　　“梅里韦先生”则说，据他耳闻是有位青年勋贵终于拟结丝萝，打算在岛上度蜜月啦。还有位“郁纳斯”说，他了解的情况是，海军部买下了这个地方，准备搞几项试验，但内容保密啦，等等，等等。然而有一点可以肯定：印地安岛成了新闻！

　　注：Cupid是丘比特。

　　文中的hush hush就等于我们中文的“嘘”。

　　From his pocket Mr. Justice Wargravedrew outa letter. The handwriting was practically illegible but words here and there stood out with unexpected clarity.

　　沃格雷夫法官先从口袋里掏出一封信。尽管笔迹认不真切，但通篇行文措辞却异常明确：

　　Dearest Lawrence… such years since I heard anything of you… must come to Indian Island… the mostenchantingplace… so much to talk over… old days…communion with Nature… bask in sunshine… 12.40 from Paddington… meet you at Oakbridge… and his correspondent signed herself with aflourishhis everConstance Culmington.

　　“亲爱的劳伦斯……分别多年……务请光临印地安岛……景色迷人之至……离情别意，又何其多！……往日云烟……人天交融……向阳之乐……12点40分由帕庭顿车站出发……在橡树桥恭候大驾……具名是位女的，花体签名是：康斯坦斯·卡尔明顿。

　　注：这里的his ever是站在劳伦斯的角度看，外国人写信最后会写yours sincerely一类的结束语，这里就是yours ever。

　　Mr. Justice Wargravecast back in his mindto remember when exactly he had last seen Lady Constance Culmington. It must be seven -- no, eight years ago. She had then been going to Italy tobask in the sunand be at one with Nature and thecontaditd. Later, he had heard, she had proceeded to Syria where she proposed to bask in yet stronger sun and live at one with Nature and thebedouin.

　　沃格雷夫法官先生苦苦思索着末一次见到康斯坦斯·卡尔明顿夫人的具体日期，想必有七年，不，八年了吧！那时她正去意大利准备享向阳之乐，同大自然和田夫野老融为一体。后来，听说她又向前到了叙利亚，那里的阳光更盛，乐意更浓，更能同大自然和阿拉伯牧民融为一体。

　　注：bask就是晒太阳的意思，动词。

　　Constance Culmington, he reflected to himself, was exactly the sort of woman who would buy an island and surround herself with mystery! Nodding his head in gentle approval of his logic, Mr. Justice Wargrave allowed his head to nod.

　　他想起来了，康斯坦斯·卡尔明顿就是这种妇女，一个人买上一座小岛住下，那显得有多么神秘！沃格雷夫法官先生觉得自己推断得这样有理，不禁微微点起头来。就这样点呀点呀的……
